Tsuwano’s Tangible Cultural Property: Tawara Hardware Store

The building was erected in the middle of Meiji period (1868-1912) during which it was operated as a hardware store. From the Taisho period (1912-1926) it started to sell agriculture related tools and seeds.

The building is a two storey wooden structure, with metal shingle roofed eaves in the front and a wide shop front. The shop has earthen floor with a small corridor leading to the back area with a garden and living space. A tatami room is located on the left of the corridor.

The plank door in front is divided into 3 segments from top to bottom. Lifting up one by one it is stored in a box attached to the lintel.
