Tsuwano’s Tangible Cultural Property: Kyodokan Tsuwano History Museum

Built in 1942 (Shōwa 17), this was one of the earliest facilities in Japan established to collect, preserve, and display historical materials and cultural objects from the local region.

The building is a two-storey wooden structure with a tiled roof. The front entrance features a kirizuma-zukuri gabled design, with stairs leading up to the entrance hall. These and other architectural features reflect a wayō-secchū style (和洋折衷 わようせっちゅう), a blend of traditional Japanese and Western architectural elements.

The entrance gate is said to have been relocated from the residence of the Kusakari clan, relatives of the Kamei clan, the ruling family of Tsuwano Domain. Together with the guard house, the earthen wall beside the gate, and the old pine tree standing beside the bridge, the gate area creates an atmosphere reminiscent of the Edo period.

津和野町郷土館

昭和１７年（1942）、津和野地域の歴史資料を展示する施設として全国でも早い時期に建設された資料館。木造瓦葺二階建で、建物正面には切妻造の車寄を持ち、玄関ホールに階段を設けるなど和洋折衷のデザインとなっている。
入口の門は、津和野藩主、亀井氏一族の草刈家の屋敷門を移設したものと言われ、脇の番所や土塀、橋の袂に立つ歴史ある松などとともに、江戸期の風情を醸し出している。
